Description  A unique woodland set well down a private lane on the west side of a small valley. The eastern boundary is formed by the stream flowing gently southwards to fill the lakes in Nymans Gardens (National Trust) and then flowing on to form the River Ouse.  Rais Wood's water eventually flows out into the Channel through Newhaven.

There's a wealth of different parts to experience and explore from the open ground by the spreading yew at the entrance off the private lane, through the oak and chestnut of the upper slopes. Lower down streams emerge from the ground where alder grows out of the moister parts. Further down the valleyside the open ground below the cables is a favourite haunt of the fallow deer - a fine wide antlered buck accompanied by a doe with her young. Over the millenia the stream has cut its way into a secluded steep-sided ravine, between this and the open ground birch is evenly spread over the hillocks and into the hollows, a fascinating landform.

Rais Wood has its own small stream, perfect for damming up and playing in.

Local area This part of West Sussex is very well-wooded. Rais Wood lies on the northern edge of Blackfold Wood between High Beeches Gardens where afternoon tea can be enjoyed, The National Trust's Nymans Gardens and the fine country houses, Ditton Place and Brantridge Park.

Boundaries  These are shown by orange markings and are: the meadowside, the centre of the stream, the line of posts and the lane edge.

Sporting rights are included.

Please note Felling has taken pace recently under the cables and will soon be cleared and logged up, producing a ready supply of firewood.
