Spar Wood is in a really quiet part of Kent, a couple of miles from the Pilgrims Way and the North Downs Way. It is set well back from the quiet country road it lies on. From the sunny west-facing slope of the woodland, you will see a very attractive meadow valley if you peep through the trees. These trees are many and varied – oak, wild cherry, birch, beech, hornbeam, hawthorn, ash and elder. The wood is very well filled with mature chestnut coppice, but the other trees manage to hold their own.

Spar Wood lies within Oakenpole and Limekiln Woodlands and is a Site of Ancient Woodland and is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in a Special Landscape Area (SLA). It is said that this area has been woodland for at least 700 years. The soil is mainly flinty clay overlying chalk.

There is direct access off the public road, a brick paved hardstanding for parking inside the wood, an open-fronted shelter and picnic table.

The owner of Spar Wood will have vehicle rights of way along the tracks on the map marked in green.

Covenant   There is a covenant, click here to read, on the woodland designed to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodland.

Use the link above for directions, if coming from the A20 use Hubbards Hill signed Warren Street and Otterden opposite East Lenham rather than the turning by the cemetry.

  • Leave the M20 at junction 8 and go 6 miles southeast on the A20, towards Lenham.
  • Passing Lenham on your right, take the left turn, into Hubbards Hill, signposted to Warren Street and Otterden.
  • Go 1 mile up to Warren Street village. The road then bears left, past the Harrow Inn on your right.
  • Take the next turning left just before a white painted house with a post box on the corner.
  • Go ¾ mile and take a right turn, just before Payden Street Farm. (Take care as the roads are very narrow)
  • After a short distance you will reach a “Oakenpole and Limekiln Woods” sign.
  • Park near the sign. Please do not block any of the tracks/bridleways.
  • Walk about 250 metres along the road and on your left is a track leading off the road, with a forests.co.uk 'Woodlands for sale' and Spar Wood sign. Follow the track in,  at the start Spar Wood is on the right hand side and after about 150 metres opens up to both sides of the track.
