Description: Coed Marchogion is a pocket of broadleaf woodland graced by some large mature specimens of oak, ash and sycamore amongst a broad variety of tree species. As well as the upper canopy mentioned, there is also birch and rowan, loved by birds when weighed down with crimson red berries, and quite a proportion of alder which thrives in wet conditions. At understorey level can be found overstood hazel coppice and holly.

There are several quite wet areas underfoot throughout the wood, and for anyone interested in conservation this would be a fantastic opportunity to develop this existing wetland habitat, perhaps by clearing a little of the tree cover in areas, re-coppicing the hazel - a useful resource - and creating small ponds to encourage even more wild birds in as well as other mammals and insects which thrive in this valuable type of environment. The stream running east to west through the woodland is another valuable asset to the woodland and its wildlife.

The damp forest floor is ideal habitat for a number of ferns, among them shield ferns, hart's tongue ferns, maidenhair ferns and polypodys. Most of the woodland is a restored ancient woodland site, and in spring the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, wood sorrel, violet and primrose.

Access: The woodland is accessed via a gateway off the B4306. There is a right of way over the access track, and a right to park in the woodland just inside the gate. The boundary of Coed Marchogion is alongside the parking area. The remnants of an old path runs through the wood, but is not always easy to follow on the ground at the moment.

Sporting rights: Included

Mineral rights: retained by a previous owner (but not likely to be exercised)

Covenant: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Local area: The woodland is located close to the village of Pontyberem, which offers local amenities such as a shop and pub. Pontyberem is situated in the Gwendraeth Valley, halfway between Carmarthen and Llanelli (both approximately 10 miles away) and access to the A48 and M4 is within 15 minutes.

Pembrey Country Park situated on the eastern side of Carmarthen Bay, starting at the mouth of the Twyi Estuary, consists of about 490 acres of parkland and coast to explore. Cefn Sidan is a beach within the park and one of several in South West Wales that has won the coveted Blue Flag award.

The Millennium Coastal Path, which spans 13 miles of coastline from Loughor to Pembrey, offers views of the Gower Peninsula and the opportunity for traffic-free cycling.

The National Wetlands Centre, about 1-mile east of Llanelli, is one of nine wetland nature reserves managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

Boundaries: The boundaries are marked in mauve paint on wooden marker stakes and trees on the western and eastern boundaries. The southern boundary runs along an earth bank and some painted marker stakes have been used to further define the boundary. The northern boundary is marked by a fence line and marker stakes near the shared entrance gate.

VIEWING: At any time with a copy of these particulars.
