Description   Rail Wood is quiet, accessible, and well cared for. It is largely chestnut coppice which was last cut about 15 years ago. There are also many mature oaks spreading their branches overhead, these can be seen as a darker green on the aerial photos. Springtime is when the wood is at its best with a wonderful display of bluebells. It lies within Oakenpole and Limekiln Woods. It is said that this area has been woodland for at least 700 years and there are references to firewood for London being sourced from here in 1274. The woodland lies along a very quiet country lane, with convenient parking at its edge. Designated as semi-natural ancient woodland Rail Wood is in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) a Special Landscape Area (SLA). The soil is well drained, being mainly flinty clay overlying chalk.

The owner of Rail Wood will have vehicle rights of way along the tracks on the map bordering the woodland.

Covenant   There is a covenant, click here to read, on the woodland designed to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of this and adjoining woodland.

  • Passing Lenham on your right, take the left turn, into Hubbards Hill, signposted to Warren Street and Otterden.
