Description  Secluded and sited well off the 'beaten track' Wend Wood has much to offer. It has the feeling of an exotic garden, on the higher levels pine trees run down the west facing slope to the lower internal track. Here true seclusion can be found.

In contrast to the pines, birch with rhododendron cover the valley side leading down to a fast running stream tumbling over hard sandstone rock along the ghyll floor.  Over the millennia the stream has worked its way down through the softer layers of stone.

Several tracks meander through the birch mix, some leading down to the stream. Although the boundary is the stream centre, in practice the whole stream can be enjoyed. It is very relaxing watching the water riffle over the stones whilst small aquatic invertebrates dart hither and thither in the water.  

The southern boundary is shared with the National Trust's Nymans Gardens created by the Messel family who like the Loders at nearby High Beeches were wealthy garden creators and collectors.

The wood is classified as PAWS, plantation on ancient woodland site and is in the High Weald AONB.

Local area This part of West Sussex is very well-wooded. Wend Wood is tucked within the large woodland area of Blackfold, Denchcombe, Harrys, Carroty and Cow Woods. Nearby High Beeches Gardens is well worth a visit. The National Trust's Nymans Gardens and the fine country houses, Ditton Place and Brantridge Park are also close.  Once part of a large estate the woods and nearby gardens were set out by the Loders, a family well know in plant collecting circles.

Boundaries These are shown by mauve markings on free-standing posts and on boundary trees. To the west the boundary is the centre of the stream, along the south there is an old fence line, on the eastern side there are mauve marked fence posts and beyond these the boundary is 3 metres from the track centre. A line of posts marks the northern boundary.

Wend Wood is about 5 miles south of Crawley, just off the A23 due east of Handcross.

Heading south along the M23 go past J11, the road then becomes the A23(T)

  • take the next slip road signed Handcross B2110 / B2114
  • at the roundabout take 2nd left, (straight on) signed Handcross
  • at the next roundabout turn left, signed to Turners Hill and High Beeches B2110 - High Beeches Lane
  • after about ½ mile look out for the sign to The High Beeches Gardens
  • then take the 2nd entrance on the right after the gardens entrance into the Old Flour Mill, now offices for a software company
  • drive straight in between the 2 brick pillars, then bear left onto the old tarmac track
  • follow this track, pass the 'Private' signs
  • after almost ½ mile pull in on the right by the 'For Sale' sign
  • park in the open area and walk down the track using the wood plans in these details.
